Flashlight of the Week

The Go! Team goes from 0 to 60 in a blink and they never pull off the redline. Their new video for "T.O.R.N.A.D.O." looks and feels like the schoolyard throwdown you've dream about, wherein you face your childhood nemesis head to head and reign victorious.

CMJ: Hip Hop To See

Freddie Gibbs
With a series of mixtapes under the belt and Str8 Killa EP released this summer, Gibbs can justify his #13 spot on Billboard's Heatseeker chart . His second single, "Oil Money" features several guests (including Bun B and Black Keys' Dan Auerbach ) but Gibbs double-time rap (see 3rd verse) shines on this slow blues groove. He typically rhymes just behind the beat, but for CMJ Freddie Gibbs is poised to the lead the pack.

10/22 - Glasslands
10/23 - Brooklyn Bowl

Jah C
His velvety smooth rhymes drips in retro soul, with warm instrumentation to cozy up to. The cymbals tsssst so crisply against the bumping fuzzy bass line... I mean, it got me swoonin'.

10/20 - Southpaw

Big Freedia
The jams to raise your hands up and dip low. Hailing from New Orleans, Big Freedia overcame the devastation of Hurricane Katrina to celebrate with straight party hip hop bounce where the energy is revved up with every DJ scratch. He's a commanding presence with a voice similar to DJ Kool ('Let Me Clear My Throat' fame) and lays chants all over the track. But let's address the elephant in the room, he's openly gay in the generally misogynistic hip-hop scene. Aside from the gender references, this music is for anyone looking to get their grind on.

Fri 10/22  South Paw - Brooklyn, NY at BUST CMJ Party w/ Dominique Young Unique and Javelin
Sat 10/23 Santos Partyhouse - Brooklyn, NY
Sat 10/23 Public Assembly - Brooklyn, NY at Brooklyn Vegan Day Party w/ Jamie Lidell, Wild Nothing, and Marnie Stern

Dominique Young Unique
She's not competition for Nicki Minaj's rap wizardry, but Unique is another cutesy voiced yet precocious female MC (akin to Rye Rye and Santigold), who can hold her own. WIth a bit of dub, a bit of 80s Stevie Wonder samples, and of course at-ti-TUDE, she's fit to blast at both hipster dance parties and hiphop clubs.

10/19 - Webster Hall (Studio)
10/22 - Webster Hall
10/23 - Santos Party House

NinjaSonik
These guys are the most punk rock of all hiphop acts I have ever seen. With a small audience at one SXSW show,  NinjaSonik left the stage, got on the floor, and started a rap battle/skank dance/mosh pit with the handful of people there. The beats are thick, the rhymes are swift, and with a song like "Somebody Gonna Get Pregnant"- it's obvious they came to get wild.

10/19 - S.O.B.s

Psalm One
A female MC that is touted as Lauryn Hill meets Devin the Dude. With straight Chicago Blues beats on 'Woman At Work,' she got a heavy voice that's cool, calm and totally in control. She ain't playin' aaaiiight!?

10/19 - Rose Live Music
